Bee-eater: The colourful expats

There was another ornithologic highlight in this summer: visiting bee-eater which have a very exotic look.

Actually, these colourful birds live in the east and south of Europe. But, some of them breed between May and July in warmer areas of Germany for example in wine-growing regions of Palatinate. Although, they were once extinct in Germany.

They mainly feed on bees, bumblebees, dragonflies, moths and beetles. So, the bee-eater have really good flying skills to prey the insects on the wing. Once they were successful they sit down on a limb and throw the prey into the air – again and again. To „detox“ the prey the bee-eater hit the bees several times onto the limb.

It is fascinating to observe those wonderful birds. In my eyes they are the most beautiful birds in Germany.

Have fun watching the photos!

Best regards,

Thomas
