The Spanish coasts of the Atlantic Ocean (1/4): Asturias

At the end of August we started a journey to the South of Europe: This time simply by car! We selected four destinations for this trip: Navarra, Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias.

We knew the diversity of the motifs, but I was curious or rather sceptical about the realization of the photographic projects. Because apart from the semi-desert at the beginning of the trip we were in the "green part of Spain". This is not without reason: Mild temperatures meet a lot of humidity and rain. I have been there in 2016 and I already noticed these difficult conditions – it was the only trip within the last four years which was not really successful in terms of landscape photography.

After this second journey I can confirm that you need a bit luck for landscape photography in Asturias. Often, due to the nearby mountain location on the coast, there is either a blue sky or an unstructured grey in grey, which only rarely enables interesting lighting moods. At two of my favorite beaches I had bad luck again – but I stay tuned 😉 because this was not the last trip to this wonderful area.

Overall, we were really keen with the photographic conditions of all four destinations. We had some real highlights and even in Asturias, despite the difficult weather, it was great to have the cameras with us. I was even able to create three full series of pictures and to create one film.

Asturias is not comparable to any other country in Spain. It is not only green through and through, but now and then one feels as if one is standing in the rainforest or on a blooming heath landscape. Even at the end of August, nothing is dry or withered, and in terms of the season it is still absolutely summery in September. Only a few forests on the Canary Islands still have that to offer.

I selected 15 pictures for you that show the contrasts of this country: Wonderful sunsets, cloudy forests and rugged coasts.
