Bird Photography on Mallorca (Part 1): Life at the salt lakes

Today I would like to show you some images of our last trip to trip to Mallorca, where we spent 10 days in early April. As you may have noticed, last year I had already changed the travel times planned for Texel against Mallorca. This year too.

One reason for this last May was that prices in the prices in the Netherlands had become very high (at least for last-minute bookings) booking) and during the same period the weather was much better on Mallorca and you can get there very quickly.

After I had been able to explore the island photographically in many the island in many places, this year I focussed on only two places on only 2 places, one of which we stayed in (at the salt lakes of the south). the salt lakes of the south).

As there was hardly a cloud in the sky for more than 10 days, this trip was this trip was actually almost a kind of holiday 😅. From a photographic point of view, I naturally focused on wildlife photography in these conditions. wildlife photography and actually everything happened between 7.00-8.45 a.m. before breakfast, and in the evening from 7.15pm and 8.30pm before dinner. So in the morning a little longer in the mornings, as it is colder and therefore a little hazier. the harsh light is slowed down a bit.

In other words: between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. is a holiday. and this time we actually spent it extremely relaxed. And And that's why, I'll be honest, the two series that were taken there, were done with a fairly manageable amount of effort.

In the meantime, I know some good places there that I can drive with the car and so all the pictures in this first part were taken from the car. are taken from the car. Many birds there tolerate cars, but not people.

What I really like about Mallorca from a photographic point of view is the extremely weather, the frequent calm in the mornings and evenings, and the wonderful flora. wonderful flora in April. And from an ornithological point of view, of course ornithologically, of course, the fact that you get to see completely different motifs than in the Netherlands, for example. The temperatures in Mallorca in April with the microclimate at the salt lakes, very cool. In concrete terms, it was always morning session it was always 4-7° C, which I find good, because then hardly any mosquitoes fly. Twice I even put on gloves.

This year there were still a lot of flamingos there and on two mornings I was able to photograph them very closely. However, it is not easy to crop them out nicely, as their extreme size means that the edge of the bank is quickly in the picture and only very few perspectives are suitable for photography.

All in all, it was my most successful trip so far in terms of nature photography. Besides the flamingos, I was also able to take good pictures of the beautiful velvet-crowned warbler and in the second part I also got some nice photos of red-legged partridges, cirl buntings, hoopoes, cilpsalp and serin.

All pictures were taken with my combo of Z9 and Z600 TCS. This was the first time I had taken pictures with the swivelling converter from the car and it was a relief, because changing the converter in the car was always annoying.

I hope you enjoy this first part of the series, both contain 24 pictures!
