Landscape photography without clouds – challenge accepted (Sardinia Part 2)

The second part of my Sardinia series was also taken during the second week of our trip – a week in which not a single cloud appeared in the sky. I hadn’t experienced that in a very long time. In the Algarve, for example, such weather is often forecast, but in reality you still tend to get some lovely high clouds at sunrise or sunset, or a thin band of cloud drifting through. Here, in the second week, there was absolutely none of that 😅

As I’ve mentioned in several blog posts in my “Thoughts” category, I usually switch to other genres of nature photography as soon as the sky is completely cloudless – at least under normal circumstances…

This time, I had my 840mm lens with me for bird photography and had set my sights on species such as the blue rock thrush and the cirl bunting, both of which I saw every day. There were also a few opportunities for abstract “colours & shapes” images.

However, wide-angle photography in the north of Sardinia somehow worked quite well even without clouds. For one thing, the subjects are generally less “dramatic” than in other well-known locations. In addition, both the granite and porphyry rock are relatively light in colour, meaning you often don’t have to deal with extreme contrasts – unlike, for example, the dark flysch formations in Madeira, Asturias, Cornwall or the Alentejo.

But feel free to judge for yourselves – for me, the weather in the following images was not just “acceptable”, but actually worked very well.

I’ve also slipped in four detail shots that I found quite interesting 😉

From a technical point of view, I shot as wide as possible – at the most favourable time of day (often only a few minutes under these conditions), this creates a stronger gradient in brightness that darkens towards the top. I further emphasised this on location using a filter. At least to my eye, it works very nicely.

I hope you enjoy the second part of my images from this beautiful island!
